Right now I have medium brown hair with honey highlights. Can I use an at home coloring kit to dye over this color or will the highlights show through? Also, I want to dye my hair an Auburn Brown color, will it turn out alot darker at the roots? My roots are now very dark brown (my natural hair color.)

If you don't have the $$$$ you are going to have to forget about highlights for now. Just get yourself a do-it-yourself kit and make the whole thing Auburn Brown. You start trying to do highlights at home, you're not going to like the results.

They have root touch-up kits available now. You can try to do that OR you can just color your entire head the Auburn Brown. Your hair will not be so much darker at the roots, as the hightlights will absorb the color since they are light. Just be very careful coloring at home with anything red (Auburn).....leave it in for 5-10 minutes less than the requested time or it will get VERY red!

L'Oreal has a kit that has both an all over dye and a highlight color together. I don't remember the name, but if you look in a drugstore or a Target etc, you will see it. I know it is in a reddish box.

I don't really know too much about my friend's ethnicity, but she has very light (white) skin and dark hair on her head. The other day she was wearing a tank top and she wanted to show me her new belly button piercing. When she lifted her shirt up, she had hair on her stomach. I don't just mean the happy trail between her belly button and pubic area. She also had the hair on her back and chest area. It's not thick or dark like the hair on our heads or under our arms and on our legs (I'm of course talking about people with dark thick hair, not you lucky people who grow fine, blonde hairs on your legs), but it is short and fine, but it has pigment to it. Definitely noticeable on her white skin. Is this normal. I've tried reading about it on the internet, but I can't really find anything about it. I don't think it's hirsutism because it's not long, coarse, really dark, curly...nothing like the hair you would find on a man. Anyway, my question is if this is normal or not.

What you're describing doesn't sound too out of the norm. Some women are just hairier than others. Since she seems happy with her body hair (if she's confident enough to show you her stomach), I'd say don't hassle her about it.

black hair is nearly impossible to dye.... you are basically putting color on what you already have and if you put sumthing on black it wont show...

the only thing i would suggest is getting a color MUCH lighter than you want... that might be enough to take your hair a lil lighter and reddish

also the semi perminant does have soemthing to do with it...

The colour wasn't strong eonough for your hair. You should get it professionally stripped ( don't just bleach it as your hair can and will fall out) and then put a colour over the top, otherwise you could try a permanent hair colour and leave it on longer than it says howver you have to wait at least a week or you willstress your hair and cause it to break

the darker your hair, the more difficult it is to dye it with the least possible damage.

You have to bleach it first, I'm an Asian with blonde hair. I had to leave my peroxide on for about 60-90 minutes. Because, black is the darkest color, you WILL not be able to just dye it simply, it needs to be weakened to a lighter color. I recommend going to the hair salon and getting it proffesionally done especially if you have never seen anyone do it before.

I'm no expert, so please check this out first. I think because it is non permanent hair dye, it probably does not have any peroxide. Peroxide bleeds out your natural color from the hair and then the dye color redeposits where the natural color used to be. (That's what my friend, a hairdresser, told me years ago) Most, if not all, haircolors have a phone number you can call on the box or listed on the instructions. Call that number, they can tell you more.

Your hair probably is reddish, but you won't see it until you're in the sunlight or intense light.

Your hair is very dark, therefore it cannot grab the colour. Your base colour will be the black. What you will see is a red sheen or highlight to the hair.

Unfortunatly you will need to find a hair dying product that will work on dark hair, often red or auburn such as you used will not work on such dark hair as i have tried it before. Next time leave it in over time than the instructions say, it should help to keep it in. it's hard to colour the jet black hair. Especially if you do it at home... and the colour that you used it non-permanent... it wont show anything to your hair.... unless you have light hair colour.

But you can try to colour it again with permanent colour, and follow the instruction....

tip: buy the bright auburn colour, so when you apply it to your black hair,it still show the colour... it wont be too bright...

Or, You better go to professional salon to colour your hair.

I think she's a natural brunette, but I wouldn't know, since I don't keep up with celebrities hairstyles. I saw her in a magazine where her hair was dyed a certain brown (I forgot which), and it was pretty. I guess either color works for her.

I personally think that light skin tones look better with blonde hair. You should do it, but use a semi-permanent hair dye. That way if you don't like it, it will wash out eventually.

It is unlikely that you will like your hair all one light brown color if your hair is dark blonde. It will not look healthier - but unnatural.

Try this instead.

It is very important to understand that natural blondes - as kids or adults - do not have one color of hair. 'Blonde' hair is a mixture of many shades, from about a 5 or 6 medium to light brown shade all the way to a 10 or extra light blonde, depending on the season. We think otherwise because of all the dye jobs in the media, and it is ruining our hair!

In summers, Nordic hair lightens, in winter it turns darker because there is less sun. North Americans who live in southern states and were born blonde should remember this to avoid overprocessing.

Here what I suggest. Apply deep conditioner every night at bedtime for a week. Do not rinse. Wear a towel to sleep. Rinse in the morning. Lightly shampoo 1/2 way through the week.

See a color specialist - use the same one for at least one year.

Do ONLY the roots:

Ask for three rows of foil highlights at the crown, wherever you part your hair. Use one color in an 8N shade.

Repeat after three months. This time, ask him/her to use 9N for the first row, and an 8N for the second and third rows.

After six months, get six rows of highlights. Use 9N for the first three and 8N for the bottom three. Repeat after three months.

After one year get a full head of highlights including low lights to blend your (by now) grown-out natural color. To avoid brassy or green hair, choose a 5 or 6N shade only for the low lights on the bottom 1/4 or 'base' of your head. Use the 8N on the next lower 1/4. Blend a 9N and a 10N on top 1/2.

Touch up after three months with three rows of highlights at the crown, wherever you part your hair in the 10N shade.

Touch up after six months with six rows of highlights at the crown with a blend of the 8N and 10N shades.

And so on ...

Do not try this at home as foil highlights are hard to do and need precision to look natural.

Do not use bleach and/or a streaking cap for at least a year and one half.

Keep conditioning the hair.

Apply a shine serum protector regularly.

Avoid straighteners for a while!

Get regular trims while your hair is growing out. With all the great pulled back styles, you can wear your hair back in a messy pony tail to hide the 'roots' while they grow out or in, in your case!

I would recommend buying damage remedy by aveda... It is a set of three products, a shampoo, conditioner, %26amp; treatment. I truely does help repair the hair. When you are having your hair lightened it is so important not to overlap the bleach on previous lightened hair... this is what causes most of the damage. If you are tired of maintaining your blond... maybe instead of going all light brown, add a lowlight that matches your natural color so you don't have to touch up as often. from experience, most of my blonde clients who go dark end up wanting to go back to blonde... which will cause even more damage. Plus... one solid light brown color is boring. You will probally get sick of it fast. DO NOT try to go back to brown by buying box color... You really have to know what you are doing... there are many steps that go into darkening lightened hair. You don't want to end up green. I think lowlights are your best bet. good luck!

Coloring your hair doesn't have to be so damaging. But all color must be maintained. Your choice of the entire head, one pale color is very difficult to keep up on. I would suggest you consult with a good colorist. If you were in my chair I would suggest retouching some your roots with highlighting, I would add a med blond slightly warm tone and also a dark blond tone also slightly warm. At this point I would not add in your natural- way too dark against the ends. It would look stripey. This is not a job to be done at home. I would also recommend an in salon conditioning product and the appropriate shampoo and cond to help restore your hair. Be patient, this is going to take several visits to get the perfect balance of tones and levels of darker blond. If YOU or someone else just dumps a brown over the entire thing we are going to see another post from you in tears. It is going to be a shock, a gross- "hollow" tone and difficult to remove.

But, I do recommend putting a root lifting mouse of some sort and blow drying with a medium size round brush to give your hair a fuller, natural look. You can get some Volume hairspray and Shampoo. And when you get out of the shower and your hair is damp apply alittle hairspray and mouse, then brush it. Don't blow dry it though, it'll look like a mess! Hope I helped.

I had the same problem. I paid over $100.00 to get my hair highlighted and I came home and hated it! The next day I went to the store and bought a semi permanent hair color and did a wash on it that was close to my natural color. I had to keep this up for about 4 months and get my hair cut to finally get it back to normal. I will never do that again.

If you just got it done you can wash it out a few times with shampoo or just let it grow back out naturally. I've never gotten my hair highlighted before because the sun does it naturally, but I'm sure you can go back and get it redone to its natural color.

It's true that dying your hair does dry it out.

You can do one of two things to make sure your hair stay in healthy shape though!

1. Use an organic hair colour. It looks the same as regular hair dye and can even make your hair less dry than it already was.

2. Or you can use a really good conditioner on your hair before you dye it. Put lots in all over you hair when it's damp and leave it in for about 15 minutes. When you rinse it out, your hair should be full of moisture and ready to be dyed again!

depends on wut process you will be doing. highlights for example are more harmful to the hair than a simple dye job. if you went to the salon and they set the dates than you should be fine cuz they know wut they're doing. for example, they make appointments for touch up or wutever when they think it will be necesasry. anyhow, try to condition you hair atleast weekly, refrain from hot treatments (flat iron), and stay away from harsh chemicals like dyes,perms and relaxers as much as possible.

that sounds about right for a touch up for your color. But yes, whenever you color your hair it is hell on your hair. If you dye your hair you should use a shampoo formulated for colored hair alternatly (a day with one then a day with the other) with one for damaged hair. This will keep the color at it's best and reduce breaking. Also try to not blow dry your hair, however if you must be sure you use a dryer with a "cool" setting so that you are not toasting your hair to add to the damage. it depends on what color it is. if your staying the same color it shouldnt be that bad. going darker is always a lot better on your hair. if you are going darker than i would suggest using a demi-permanent color like natural instincts for the time being because the colorings are so close together. using products like natural instincts can even make your hair look healthier than before, and it contains no ammonia. if you are going lighter then it could harm your hair somewhat, but it should be okay with proper conditioning. Leave the conditioner on your hair for up to 15 minutes, because that is usually how long it remains active. Avoid using flat irons, curling irons, or even hairdryers as much as you can.

im guessing that if you do it yourself the reddish streaks might turn a orangey colour cause that has happened to me before as for the black it depends if there is a lot of streaks and how big they are but im thinking that they will prolly go a greyish/brown colour unless you get a really good hair dye but it would prolly still be better to do it at the hair dressers

If your hair is too high maintenace to maintain then...you should use a clarifying shampoo and wash with warmer/hot water daily! to release the color faster....HOME DYE JOBS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS A NO NO!

I am confused about the facts about the recessive and dominant genes in red hair. I have had people tell me that red hair is a recessive trait, and both sides have to carry it for it to show up. I have also had people tell me that it skips a generation. I just want to know the facts so that when my child is born and it doesn't have the same dark red hair as my husband people, his mother mostly, who is convinced it's going to be a red haired child, can be set straight about the about the whole thing. if i'm not mistaken, the dominant allele for hair colour is black. and the other colours are recessive. and it also true that it can skip generation. maybe ur husband is a heterozygous. and u dont carry the allele for red hair at all. so, maybe the characteristic will show up in ur grandchildren or their next progeny.

I think Triveni is giving you the right basic idea, except I think that hair color is a little more complicated than just one single pair of genes. But red definitely might blend with other light colors such as blond or light brown.

You should understand that recessives can skip more than one generation. A whole family of black haired folks can have only black haired kids for several generations, but then all of a sudden out pops a redhead. The genes were there all the time, but there had to be two parents who had the redhead gene and then there had to be some luck. This is why lots of families of Irish extraction or Scottish extraction can have three or four black haired kids from a black haired mom and dad, and then out pops the redhead!

I've tried to streak my hair bright blue for some time now. My hair is dyed blue black all over and although id wish it to be more blue than it is right now.. my main concern is having bright blue pieces underneath my hair on my neck.. ive tried bleaching it as best i can without letting it fall out and ive used several different blue dyes most reccently the clairol jazzing sheer haircolor in mood indigo which i dont recommend for anyone..

I put blue tips in my daughter's hair..We use Manic Panic..Her hair is a dark brown and it turned out great without bleaching..It says to use it on damp hair, we found it worked best with clean dry hair..Also, it says to use a hairdryer if you'd like the color more vivid..I'm sure it would work better with bleaching it, but I'm not a hairdresser! They make great colors and seem to hold the color the best of the ones we've tried...

If you bleach your hair please note that your hair may become damaged. Depending on the volume or strength of the bleach your hair may go dry and your ends may split... my advice is go to a hairdresser they will no a safer way for you to tone down your hair. Toners are better for you hair then bleaching it.

you can always go to a beauty supply store (or find a website) that sells clip in extensions. buy light brown to blonde colored extensions and also buy a blue hair dye that you like. simply follow the instructions of the blue dye and color the extensions! then you can clip them in to "peek-a-boo" where ever you want. then simply take them out when your dad is around! it's a win/win. if you dont feel comfortable doing all this you can always go to a salon and ask for help!

I brought in a picture of exactly what I wanted.

My stylist cut my hair and all that, but when I went home and compared my hair to the hair in the picture, my style looked nothing like it was supposed to.

I'm a little sad because I had wanted to get this edgy, cute style for a while. I mean, I like my hair now, but it's not exactly what I wanted. It doesn't have the same edginess I had been going for and what was shown in the picture.

Like my hair has some face framing layers and I have bangs now that are a little slanted and layer from my cheekbone to my chin. My hair is straight and it's all one length in back. How can I make my hair look a bit edgier now that it's not as how I would have liked it?

Going back to the stylist is not at option at this point, and I don't wanna take dye or scissors to my hair since I'd mess way up.

ive had many experiences with this . often the reason that ur hair doesnt look the same and the stylist forgets to tell u is the products and effort put into the hair as opposed to just drying it out of the shower and looking like that or even straightening. i would suggest playing with it some , use new productss for ur hair or go to a different person, u could even adding your own touches to the hair style so it is what u want and its original. good luck with that :]

If you straighten your hair like I do, then here's an easy way of giving it an edge without using nasty wax:

Divide your hair into sections when straightening and leave the bottom portion down. Straighten it and add hairspray (I think the spray-paint type of bottle works best but it's usually harmful to the atmosphere) to the layer. Let it dry and to the same to the next layer, and the next, until your hair is straightened.

Now flip upside down and use hairspray on all of your hair. Yay! Cute kind-of spikey look! (Obviously that's a lot of hairspray being used, but I without fail get a TON of compliments on my hair when I do this and it's almost zero added effort if you already flat-iron your hair.)

As an added bonus if you wait a day or two between washings, your hair will probably will look the same the next morning because of the hairspray. :)

After you take a shower, when your hair is wet/damp, spray some hair spray on it and maybe some leave in conditioner..? Leave-in conditioner tends to make my hair a little bit... messier. It's a good messy though, and it makes it easier to style. Use a circular brush, and blow dry the different sections to your layers one at a time to separate them and then, if you live near an Aveda- they have this AMAZING stuff that adds TONS of volume to you hair, it's called hair potion. It's magical I swear. It's like a powder you put in your hair, but you rub it and it's like a cream. It will bring your hair right up and add that edge you've been looking for!

first a relaxing cream is used on your hair to break it down to the point where your hair is stretchy.

then the relaxing cream is washed out and your hair is flat ironed in very, very tiny sections, repeatedly.

immediately afterwards, the straightening perm cream is put into your hair for 20 minutes.

lastly, wash out the cream and blow dry. do not wash your hair for a recommended 3 days afterwards.

i don't recommend doing this by yourself. there is NO way you can get salon results. (i say this because i'm remembering how much they flat ironed, especially the hair on the back of my head, how i still i had to be when they were putting on the perm cream.) i don't recommmend doing this at home.

Try a color gloss to brighten things up, or a semiperminent.These usually have the best results for reds. The red color molecule is the smallest, so it's difficult to get it to stay in the hair shaft. It fades quickly.Staining the hair with a semi is good and lasts as long as a perminent.Sometimes better because as you use perminent colors over again you are damaging the hairshaft causing it to remain open...losing more red.

to make your eyes stand out, either use black eyeliner on top, blended near your lashes, and a color that's a little off from your eye color for your eyeliner on bottom w/neutral eyeshadow. or a smoky eye look w/black eyeliner %26amp; grey eyeshadow.

you might want to get her flea stuff like advantex cause she might have fleas, my dog did. but she might have a hot spot on her skin, if she does you need to get her a prescription from her vet, thats what my other dog had

I loved what Ellen's Halloween set looks like, she has Halloween decorations all over the place, plus I loved her costume, she looked very beautiful, plus I loved what she has done to her hair, any did anyone see this Halloween show of the Ellen DeGeneres talk show, I loved when the man brung out the real bats and I liked the vampire bat, though I could not stand looking at those bats because it gave me the chills, I also loved Jennifer Love Hewit's costume she reminded me of Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz, I loved the videos Ellen showed of people being scared when they were in the Halloween house, plus I loved when people got a scare from Ellen when she hid in the office, I loved this show so much that I am going to youtube and look for this whole episode of the show, Ellen's birthday is in January, seven days after my birthday, me and Ellen gave a lot in common, our birthdays are in the same month, we both happen to love differenly, we are funny and we look good, though I am a male.

i have brown hair %26amp; i want to dye a small streak of it purple. a friend of mine was telling me that i would have to bleach the hair first before dying it purple so it would show up better.

It depends if you have dark brown or light brown hair. I dyed my bangs blue and I have light brown hair. I got it bleached professionally, but I would not recommend this if you have light hair!! As soon as the blue faded I was left with a gross puke green color streak and dead nasty hair. After I chopped the dead hair off I dyed my hair myself, with Manic Panic hair dye. It's sort of temporary (lasts around 1-2 weeks) but it's easy to reapply. I'm going to dye my hair again with Manic, either blood red (for the holidays lol) or blue again. Everyone I know loves Manic, and it always seems to give good results. Good luck!!

what you want to do is just put it were you want it.

You will have to bleach it to get it to show up and last longer. I recommend you use Loreal Quick Blue Vol. 30 bleach. I naturally have dark brown hair and this is the bleach I use (I have pink hair).

My tip for you is to basically select what section of hair you want to dye and clip it using a plastic clip so that you can isolate it from the rest of your hair. If you have long hair you might want to put it back in a pony tail.

To use Loreal Quick Blue you're going to have to buy the powder in one packet and the cream developer in the bottle separately. Follow the directions on the Quick Blue packet and things should turn out fine. You're not going to have to use all of the bleach powder since you're only dying a small section of hair. You can buy the bleach at Sally Beauty (and probably other beauty stores) or online.

Speaking of the dye specifically, I recommend that you use Special Effects. Out of all of the "alternative color" brands of dye (Manic Panic, Special Effects, Punky, BWild, Stargazer, etc...) it comes most recommended from people who dye their hair such colors. It's also the brand of dye I use, and I must say it's fantastic. You can buy Special Effects in Hot Topic or online. It's about 8 or 9 dollars online and about 15 dollars in Hot Topic. A few websites they have it at are amphigory.com and garment-district.com. The amphigory website also has pictures of various people with their hair dyed each specific color so it's easier for you to pick which color you want (Special Effects makes many different types of purple).

bleaching your hair is a pain because if and when the color fades and your hair starts growing out.. you'll have a blond streak halway down your head...! bleach does not fade out of your hair. but with this dye VV if it fades, it fades back to brown.

but i reccomend colour rays. it comes in fuscia [idk how to spell that right. but its like a purple with a kind of pink tint] and the colour rays dyes are for dark hair. so you dont have to bleach first and the color comes out great! and the color lasts long.

the box of dye/highlighting dye [whatever you wanna call it..] is about 13 dollars and you can get it at CVS or pretty much any supermarket.

since you're only doing one strand and there will be a lot of dye left... and its 13 dollars, you should have your friend do some too lol. its fun%26amp;pretty. but you cant save the dye. you have to throw it out when you're done.

If you really want a vibrant purple, i think you should definately bleach it first. I used Manic Panic after my hair was bleached and it doesn't last too long, it fades quite quickly. A permanent dye is much better.

I would suggest getting the purple done at a beauty salon for best results, or you can consult them for a good hair dye.

Think about complimentary colors. The compliment of red is green. If you get a hairdye that has green undertones, the contrast may show the pink in your complexion more. A little puff shouldn't be too much of a problem. Hair follicle tests are different from urine tests as they are much more difficult to disguise. They sell stuff in headshops for that but they don't work. If it was really just a puff and you aren't overweight (I say this because the THC in weed is stored in fat cells) then it shouldn't be a problem. Good luck!

Edit: No do not cut your hair and no you can't fail a test just from being around someone who smokes. They could blow it right in your face and you'd still be fine. The mare you smoke the more it builds up in your body and therefore the longer it takes to come out. If only a few puffs a few weeks ago...you'll be fine.

I think it just depends on the person. Personally I know Asian people who do that, and I know White people who do that as well. I have a friend who is very self conscious of her eyelids (she is Asian) so she wears bangs to kind of cover up her face. I have no idea why she does that personally as I think her eyes are just beautiful. It all just depends on what hairstyle they want to wear. I think there is really no actual reason for this. I wanted to add that my sister in law who happens to also be Asian wears her hair all back and her forehead is shown. She does not wear bangs because they do not suit her face shape.

ok so i am going to be 22 weeks pregnant on monday...and i was wondering if it is ok to color my hair.. i work at a salon and the girls say it should be fine.. that they think the only reason why they say dont color your hair while pregnant is because back in the day they used to use color that had harmful chemicals.. but they dont have that anymore.. another girl said she was dying hair through out her pregnancy and it was fine.. and that she thinks its only the first 3 months..i just want to here your inputs.. i usually dye my hair every winter brown.. and my roots are growing in and i would like to at least have my hair one color which is brown and closer to my natural hair color so my roots arent showing so much..

My doctor said it was fine, and I colored my hair all throughout my pregnancy. I did many different colors, too, including brown, red, black, and blonde highlights (not all at the same time).

Make sure you're in a well-ventilated area (not closed in a windowless bathroom), don't eat the left-over dye, and you'll be fine.

The only problem you might encounter is that you may be more sensitive to the smell of the dye than you usually are. If that happens, your eyes and throat may burn, and you might begin to feel faint or have a hard time breathing. If that happens, I would try covering the hair in plastic and directing a fan at you to clear the air around you. If that doesn't help, then rinse your hair immediately, and don't try to dye again until after the birth.
